Johannesburg - The trial of Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir and five others charged with the kidnapping and attempted murder of an East Rand man began on Thursday.

Krejcir, dressed in a black suit, smiled at his wife Katerina Krejcirova sitting in the front row of the courtroom. Now and then he smiled and chatted with her and two other people sitting with her.

The trial is being heard in the Johannesburg High Court sitting in Palm Ridge, east of Johannesburg.

Before proceedings started, people were ordered not move in and out during the hearing. Police officers were told not to open the doors for anyone.

Annelene van Der Heever, for Krejcir, told the court the State had not provided the information they had requested.

“We don't know what the State's case is because there seems to be no evidence provided.”

She told the court she had requested information regarding the charges but it was not provided.

Krejcir is charged with dealing in drugs, attempted murder, and kidnapping, together with Desai Luphondo, Samuel Modise Maropeng, George Jeff Nthoroane, Jan Lefu Mofokeng, and Siboniso Miya.

Luphondo, Maropeng, Nthoroane, and Mofokeng were all released on R5000 bail each in December.
