Durban - eThekwini local David Kriel who made racist comments about Indians during Diwali wants to plead guilty.

Kriel, who is being represented by legal aid, confirmed this when he appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday morning.

Crimen injuria charges were laid against Kriel, who has been referred to Dawie but whose correct names are David Johannes, after he made the comments on Facebook in October.

In his post, Kriel wrote on Facebook group Gatvol Bluff: “To those idol worshippers and devil disciples who buy them (fireworks) in the name of religion, p***-off back to your dark hole in the backwoods of India.

“I could strangle you morons with my bare hands and derive great pleasure in watching your face turn blue and your tongue pop out,” the post continued.

Charges were laid against him by the ANC and the DA at the Durban Central and Brighton Beach police stations respectively.

Senior leaders from both parties were present in court on Monday and attended the hearing.

Kriel's case was adjourned to January.
