Johannesburg – Security forces, under the banner of Operation Fiela, have arrested 25 suspects for a range of crimes during an operation targeting the CBD of Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal.

Provincial police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane, said: “On 22 May 2015, Ladysmith Cluster, Newcastle Public Order Police and Ladysmith Public Safety officials held a multi-disciplinary crime prevention operation under the ambit of Operation Fiela. The operation mainly targeted the CBD area and resulted in the arrest of 25 suspects for various crimes including robbery, theft, rape, possession of dagga, illegal gambling, selling of liquor without a license, drunkenness and driving under the influence of intoxicating substances.

“Over 100 kilogram of dagga and several crates of liquor as well as counterfeit DVD’s were seized. The arrested suspects are due to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 May 2015.”

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for the good work of arresting the suspects and seizure of illegal stuffs, saying: “Operation Fiela is here to stay, we are well prepared to clean-up our streets in this manner and criminals will feel the heart.” - ANA
