The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday praised police for arresting a second man in connection with the murder of ANC councillor Wandile Mkhize.
“We commend the police for the arrest and call upon them to leave no stone unturned in this investigation so that all perpetrators can be brought to book,” provincial spokesman Senzo Mkhize said.
Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said a 40-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in Umlazi, Durban. A 9mm pistol was found in his possession.
Mkhize said: “The ANC condemns all the politically related deaths and calls on our people to volunteer information that will help the law enforcement agencies to put a stop to this scourge.”
The man was expected to be charged with the murders of councillor Wandile Mkhize and his friend Nhlakanipho Shabane, 24, and possession of an unlicensed firearm, when he appeared in court later on Thursday.
Mkhize was killed in a drive-by shooting near his home in Manaba, Margate, on July 30. Shabane, who was with him at the time, died in hospital.
Another man, who is accused of conspiring to murder Mkhize, appeared in the Ramsgate Regional Court on Tuesday. Dumisani Skhakhane, 33, would be back in court on September 5.
The ANC would hold a march in Durban on Friday to condemn political killings, rape, abuse of the elderly, and human trafficking. - Sapa
