Durban - A well-known Verulam man was found strangled at his home on Friday morning.

Mohit Maharaj, 60, who co-owned a photographic studio in the town for many years, was found by Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) security guards early on Friday.

A police source said he was found with a black, nylon rope tied around his neck and hands. Maharaj had also suffered several blunt force injuries to his head and face.

His body was discovered after Rusa found his car abandoned on the R102 near the King Shaka International Airport.

The tyres had been punctured. Rusa head, Prem Balram, said his officers were on patrol when they discovered an abandoned Gold Mercedes Benz near Canelands – on the R102 between Verulam and the airport.

“We did a check on the number plates and found the owner’s contact details.

“We tried calling him from 3am to no avail,” said Balram.

He said they then went to the address where they found Maharaj’s body.

Maharaj was the co-owner of Calvacade Studios.
