Durban businessman Rajiv Narandas, 29, spent the Easter weekend in a cell at a Joburg police station. He was arrested last Friday on charges of intimidation over an alleged “family dispute” with his cousin.

He was held at the Brighton Beach SAPS before he appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a special bail application.

Bail was denied as Narandas was believed to be a flight risk. It emerged in court he was allegedly planning to skip the country.

This follows a decision by the Supreme Court of Appeal to dismiss his appeal on his 18-year prison sentence for stabbing 32-year-old Veenand Singh to death outside a Sandton nightclub in 2008.

His mother, Rosanne Narandas, said they would petition the Constitutional Court. She said Rajiv had become ill while in the cell.

“A doctor ordered that he be hospitalised. He was taken to hospital but the police ordered that he should be taken back to the cell. Rajiv had several operations to his stomach and stress like this aggravates the problems. He takes a lot of medication and he was deprived of some while detained.”

Narandas was transported to Joburg on Thursday. He will be held in prison until he makes a formal appearance at the Alexander Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a bail application in relation to his not handing himself over to the police when his appeal was dismissed.
