Durban – The Umlazi Regional Court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to life behind bars for raping a 10-year-old girl, KwaZulu-Natal police said in a statement on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said Macdonald Mtembeniza took the victim to his house in the Ezimbokodweni reserve in January last year. There he raped her and then threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

Zwane said he continued to prey on the child while her parents were at work until an adult noticed that she was “not well”.

The child told the adult about the repeated rapes in April 2015 and the case was investigated by the Umlazi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (Umlazi FCS). Mtembeniza was immediately arrested.

He was sentenced on Monday.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the Umlazi FCS for their thorough investigation.

“We urge all the parents to take care of their children by not leaving them alone in their absence. We would like to send a promise to all sexual predators that we will do everything to put them in jail indefinitely,” she said.
