Durban - A policeman and a policewoman have been arrested for possession of contraband cigarettes in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
They were caught in a police vehicle on the N1 on Thursday, after a tip-off, said Colonel Jay Naicker.
The vehicle was travelling towards Durban when the police stopped and searched it.
Naicker said nine boxes were found containing contraband cigarettes worth about R100 000 on the street.
“A warrant officer stationed at a specialised unit near Richards Bay and a woman could not give police an explanation on how they came into possession of the illegal cigarettes,” he said.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the police were committed to rooting out corruption and to ensuring that corrupt officials were exposed.
“We will ensure that such individuals are subjected to criminal and departmental investigations.”
The two, aged 41 and 34, would appear in the KwaMbonambi Magistrate's Court on Monday.
