The ANC's chief whip in the Hibiscus district municipality was killed in a drive-by shooting in Manaba, Margate, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.
“Around 10pm on Saturday, councillor (Wandile) Mkhize and a friend were walking along a road when they came under attack from unknown men driving in a Toyota Corolla,” spokesman Lt-Col Vincent Mdunge said.
Mkhize was killed in the “heavy gunfire” and his friend critically injured. Mkhize was declared dead on the scene.
The other man was taken to a hospital, the name of which was not disclosed for security reasons.
Mdunge said the motive for the attack was unknown. Police were investigating a case of murder with aggravating circumstances, and one of attempted murder.
