Two Mariannhill gang members were arrested in connection with eight murders, two armed robberies and four hijackings near Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old gang leader and a 34-year-old teacher from a local school were arrested at their homes on Monday, Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

The teacher was found with a .38 revolver, which a police investigation showed was used during the crimes.

The firearm had also been linked to two murders where security guards were robbed of their firearms and shot dead in Chatsworth, said Mdunge.

The two men were expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court soon.

Mdunge said the crimes happened in the Mariannhill area last month.

“The police are confident that the two outstanding gang members will be traced and arrested soon.” – Sapa
