Johannesburg - The Mthunzini High Court handed a 40-year-old man two life sentences for a double murder which he committed in 2013.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said Edward Msindo, 40, was convicted and sentenced on Tuesday.

“He was sentenced after the court heard how he brutally killed his brother’s two kids at Mandlankala area in 2013,” said Zwane.

Zwane said that on November 20, 2013, at around 5.30pm Msindo, who had just arrived at that homestead after disappearing for a long time, attacked the two children while they were at home at Mandlankala area, Esikhawini near Empangeni.

“Lindo Msindo’s neck, who was nine-years-old at the time, was cut with a bush knife. His sister Nosiphiwo Msindo, three, was strangled to death on the same day. The mother of the victims who did not know that her children were killed, started to look for them and she also asked community members to assist with the search,” Zwane said.

“Both children were found dead in a shallow grave in a half built rondavel. Police were called and the children’s bodies were dug out of the shallow grave.”

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa said he was pleased with the sentence handed down.

“This will send a strong message to those who think of committing such barbaric and senseless killings,” he said.
