Durban - KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC Willies Mchunu expressed shock on Monday at the murder of a man at a hostel in Durban.

“I find this murder and arson totally abhorrent and very violent,” Mchunu said in a statement.

Captain Thulani Zwane said a 35-year-old man was stabbed to death on Sunday during an alleged fight over a woman. The man was stabbed 14 times.

“People should be able to resolve their differences amicably without resorting to violence,” Mchunu said.

Zwane said the man fled the scene after the incident.

Angry residents allegedly set alight two rooms belonging to the man and his girlfriend at the hostel.

“Those who set alight two rooms are guilty of committing crime and should be condemned.

“Such matters should be left in the hands of police who are better equipped to handle them,” Mchunu said.
