Pietermaritzburg -

Two men have been arrested for allegedly stealing a car and attempted murder in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said the men were arrested on Saturday.

Patrolling officers saw a red Volkswagen Polo with three occupants and tried to stop it. The driver sped off. He lost control and crashed into a wall in the ensuing chase.

“The suspects then got out of the vehicle and one... produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at the police.”

The police fired back and the men fled on foot. Two were arrested later, while the third man was still at large.

The car was stolen on Friday.

The men were expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon. - Sapa
