Durban - Six men have been arrested in connection with a robbery at a tavern in Umlazi near Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Five of the men were arrested in Umlazi and the sixth in Umgababa near Umkomaas, on Wednesday, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

The men were allegedly found in possession of four unlicensed firearms, 54 live rounds, nine cellphones, cash, and liquor.

“One of the suspects was found in possession of 44 straws of heroin.”

It was believed that the money and alcohol were stolen during a robbery at a tavern on Sunday night, said Zwane.

Robbers allegedly took an undisclosed amount of money and the cellphones of the tavern's employees.

The men would appear in the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on Friday, said Zwane.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the recovery of the firearms would help prevent the occurrence of other serious and violent crimes. - Sapa
