Durban - A former Under-19 Sharks rugby hopeful faces a charge of theft for allegedly stealing a Range Rover Sport, sports utility vehicle.

Christopher Thompson, 21, appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was granted R2 500 bail.

Prosecutor Danette Cole told the court the State was unopposed to bail being granted.

Thompson’s attorney, Nerissa Farrington, provided the court with his personal circumstances saying he was unmarried, lived with a flatmate in eManzimtoti and was employed as a club rugby player. The club was not named.

The State alleges Thompson stole a Range Rover Sport SUV, worth R500 000, on June 22 in Isaiah Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road, as well as a wallet, a Rado wristwatch, Mercedes keys and two cellular phones.

According to a sports profile for Chris Thompson, he had played for the Sharks Under-19 Currie Cup team in 2014 and moved to the Blue Bulls for a chance in the Vodacom Cup and the Bull Bulls Under-21 side.

There is no reference to Thompson though on the official Blue Bulls website.

It is believed he told court staff he had played for the Sharks and Blue Bulls rugby teams.

Novisha Chetty, the public relations officer for the Sharks said on Monday that Thompson was part of the Under-19 training squad in 2014 and left halfway through, because he was not selected for the team. He was never a contracted player for the Sharks.

Thompson is expected back in court in August.
