Durban - A man and a woman appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for alleged multimillion-rand tender fraud and racketeering.

December Radebe, 39, and Thoko Mgabi, 58, of Imbali, have been charged with defrauding 34 people related to fake tenders.

They allegedly duped their victims into believing they had tender documents from the Department of Human Settlements to build 1 000 houses to the value of R158 million, and they needed “agent fees” of R600 000 to secure the tender.

The state alleges that they received about R2m from December to April this year.

The pair were arrested last week by the KZN Provincial Task Team after a tip-off by a potential victim.

The victim met the suspects at the Human Settlements offices in Pietermaritzburg where the suspects presented fraudulent documents.

They demanded a deposit of R300 000. Police then arrested and charged the pair.

They were allegedly found with fraudulent documents, a laptop and date stamps belonging to KZN Treasury offices and Human Settlements.
