South Africans should be aware of a scam in which people claiming to represent the labour department visit workplaces to conduct bogus inspections, the department said on Wednesday.

“We advise all employers and workers to be wary of these people and urge them to demand that they identify themselves with an inspector's card,” director for provincial operations Marsha Bronkhorst said in a statement.

The department discovered that a man, calling himself Theo Botha, targeted a number of businesses in Bethlehem in the eastern Free State under the pretext of being a Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) official.

The aim of the scam was apparently to steal money.

Legitimate labour department inspectors would arrange their inspections beforehand, and were never allowed to receive money from employers.

Employers could check the legitimacy of inspectors by contacting their local labour office. - Sapa
