Pretoria - The fraud case against two former employees of the labour department's Compensation Fund was postponed to May 14 in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
In a statement, labour department spokesman Page Boikanyo said the defence suffered a blow in a trial-within-a-trial on Tuesday when the court said that a statement implicating one of the accused in the fraud was admissible evidence.
The statement relates to accused Maxwell Ramaphosa, who had admitted his part in the fraud, said Boikanyo.
In February, a police officer said an “admission” contained in a statement from Ramaphosa was voluntarily given by him.
However, the defence claimed it was obtained under duress and threats of arrest.
Ramaphosa and Samuel Mfeleng, both 36, are accused of processing and facilitating fraudulent claims submitted by physiotherapist Jurry Sehunoe.
Sehunoe pleaded guilty to 15 counts of fraud and 26 of money-laundering. He received a five-year suspended jail sentence in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in February.
