Johannesburg - The trial of Sibusiso Langa, accused of killing five joggers, was expected to start in the Pretoria High Court on Monday.

Langa, a mechanical engineer, was allegedly drunk when his Mercedes Benz ML500 hit the group of joggers on October 23, 2011.

The runners were preparing for the Soweto Marathon. Four women and a man were killed. Another man was hospitalised with critical injuries.

During Langa's last appearance on May 11, in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court, the prosecution said Langa faced five counts of murder, one of attempted murder and charges related to drunk driving.

He was granted R80 000 bail in October. As part of his bail conditions, Langa, who is also a US citizen, had to surrender both passports and his driver's licence.

According to an affidavit handed to the court during his bail application, Langa would not oppose the charges.

The matter was set down for two weeks starting on February 18. - Sapa
