Limpopo - A third lawyer has been arrested for alleged fraud involving the sale of land in Limpopo, police said on Sunday.
“The advocate allegedly issued fraudulent documents to sell land in Thohoyandou,” spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
The 47-year-old, who owned a law firm, allegedly defrauded a local businessman of R215 000.
“The lawyer had allegedly promised the businessman two stands which he said were valued at R500 000.”
After paying R215 000 upfront, the businessman became suspicious and took a closer look at the sale.
“He discovered that the land was not for sale.”
More fraud cases were likely to be added as initial investigations revealed the lawyer had allegedly been defrauding other people. He would appear in the Sibasa Regional Court on Monday.
His arrest on Friday followed those of advocates Chris Koen, 41, and Johan Lamprecht, 47, and a woman, Mulalo Peggy Mokoena, last week.
Koen and Lamprecht were out on R10 000 bail each. Mokoena was in custody pending her next court appearance on Tuesday. - Sapa
