Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal man has been jailed for life by the Umlazi Regional Court for raping his 13-year-old daughter, police said.

Spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said the man raped his biological daughter at J section in Umlazi, south-west of Durban, in June last year.

“He told her that he has to do it as the father. The victim informed her mother, who was not at home during the incident,” he said in a statement.

“A case of rape was opened.... The father was arrested and convicted after several court appearances. He was sentenced to life in prison by Umlazi Regional Court.”

Provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence on Wednesday.

“We will protect women and children against vicious abusers and will keep them behind bars where they belong,” she said in a statement.

“It is very disturbing that a father will carry out such a horrendous act of violence against his own child.”
