Bloemfontein – A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to life behind bars for repeatedly raping a mentally disabled woman in 2014, Free State police said in a statement on Monday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi said Kagisho Sidwell Choeli raped the 23-year-old woman at her mother’s house in Caleb Motsabi, Mangaung.

The repeated rapes were discovered when the victim’s mother noticed a change in her daughter’s behaviour.

“These indecent acts continued until one day when the victim’s mother noticed her daughter acting differently and upon questioning her, the victim then told her mother about her ordeal,” Hlubi said.

The Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit investigated and Choeli was arrested.

The Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court sentenced him to life behind bars on Friday, April 22.
