Bethlehem, Free State - Two men convicted of murdering a retired university professor in Clarens each received life sentences in the High Court in Bethlehem on Friday, Free State police said.

Simon Dlamini, 23, and Thabiso Makoetji, 28, were also sentenced to 15 years each for aggravated robbery, Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said.

The sentences would not run concurrently.

Prof Daniel Wybenga, 69, previously of North West University, was found strangled in the bathroom of his house in Clarens in October last year. His Toyota Corolla, cellphone, and music system were stolen from the house.

Free State police commissioner Lt-Gen Thabethe Mpembe congratulated Sergeant Johannes Aslett and Constable Elias Maphisaon on their speedy yet thorough investigation of the case.
