Two awaiting trial prisoners who have been on the run for several months have been re-arrested, a Limpopo police spokesman said on Sunday.

Tshepo Mnisi was arrested on Thursday when a member of the public saw him visiting his girlfriend in Johannesburg, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Mnisi, who was being held on armed robbery charges, and two others escaped after overpowering a police officer in April. He has been on the run ever since.

Mulaudzi said Mnisi would appear in the Naphuno Magistrate's Court, in Maake, near Tzaneen, on Tuesday, in connection with the escape.

He and two alleged accomplices would appear in court on the armed robbery charges on August 13.

Mulaudzi said a second escapee, Thabo Shokane, 27, was also re-arrested on Thursday. He broke out of custody on March 13.

Shokane had been awaiting trial on charges of aggravated robbery, common assault and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He was re-arrested in Tickeyville when a local community member saw him catching a taxi. - Sapa
