Mpumalanga -

Fifteen Mpumalanga liquor outlets were closed for contravening conditions of their licences, an official said on Monday.

Trade and industry department spokesman Sidwell Medupe said more than 30 restaurants, bottle stores and taverns had been raided since Thursday.

“The outlets in Malelane, Komatipoort and Nkomazi were closed down and the owners fined R1500 each because they did not adhere to the conditions of the liquor licences issued for their businesses.”

Medupe said the owners had failed to officially appoint someone to run their business in their absence.

“The liquor act requires someone who has been certified competent by the police and approved by the liquor board 1/8to 3/8 take charge of a liquor outlet.”

The operation was conducted by the department, the police, and the liquor boards of Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and Gauteng. - Sapa
