Johannesburg - A love affair ended may have caused a man to go to a block of flats in Doornfontein, Joburg, and open fire on at least six people, killing a woman instantly.

Three children and two adults were among those injured.

The incident took place on Davies Street shortly after 6pm on Saturday.

Netcare911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said an adult and a child were found in a critical condition, while a second adult and two children were found to be in a serious condition.

“Paramedics immediately started resuscitating the woman, but tragically she was declared dead at the scene due to the extensive injuries she had sustained,” Steinmann said.

It is reported that the man began shooting randomly shortly after arriving at the block of flats.

On Sunday, a resident said they suspected it may have been a crime of passion.

The man said the dead woman visited their area frequently and was well known to the other residents.

It is reported that she was the attacker’s girlfriend.

A resident said the couple had had a fight and separated a few days before the shooting.

The dead woman’s friend asked a group of journalists visiting her flat to respect her privacy.

She told the media she was still in shock and was unable to talk about the incident, which took place during her party.

A 28-year-old resident said he was grateful that a bullet had hit his left thigh instead of his upper body. “Or it would have been a different story.”

The security guard had arrived home from work when he went out again to buy airtime.

“As I was leaving the gate, I saw blood go down my leg. I then felt a pain and realised I had been shot. I looked back to see who might have done this, but I couldn’t see anyone. So I ran for my life,” said the man.

He was treated at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and discharged on Sunday.

Gauteng police spokeswoman Captain Doniah Mothutsane said the motive for the shooting was still unknown. Police were still looking for the gunman.
