Durban - Reports of hijackings and robberies along the Inanda Road bridge intersection to the N2 have prompted the local China City Mall to protect its tenants and shoppers.

A security guard with a shotgun has been patrolling the bridge, about 300m from the mall for about a month now to deter criminals from entering the area. The mall, which recently opened, has been attracting thousands of customers.

The centre manager, Simon, who was willing to divulge only his first name, said he had heard of people being hijacked and mugged on the bridge.

He said they had had no further reports of criminal activity on the bridge since the guard was hired.

Ward councilor, Ganesh Deochand, said he welcomed the proactive measures taken by the private businesses.
