Durban - The Pietermaritzburg man who is alleged to have stabbed his former fiancée to death at the Liberty Midlands Mall remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Police Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that the man, who cannot be identified, remains under police guard at Northdale Hospital where he is being treated for injuries to his back and head.

“The suspect is in a critical condition. He will appear in court, charged with murder as soon as he recovers,” Zwane said.

Sindi Mashengu, 28, a parking ticket attendant, was stabbed twice in the neck on Monday by a man believed to be her former fiancée.

The suspect then allegedly fled the mall parking lot and tried to commit suicide by throwing himself off the nearby Armitage Road Bridge on to the N3 below.

He survived the fall and was pulled to safety by shocked motorists.

Mashengu’s family, who have been devastated by her death, told the Daily News on Wednesday that they were praying the man recovered so that he could face his punishment.

“Sindi deserves justice. Death is too good for him,” said Mashengu’s cousin, Zanele Mdlalose.

Liberty Midlands Mall spokesperson Umi Khan said staff at the centre were receiving trauma counselling.
