Johannesburg - A 62-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the rape and sexual assault of three girls in Soweto, police said on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the man, who was from Zola, was arrested at 4pm.

“He allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl and sexually assaulted two other girls aged 13 and 15,” he said.

The man was a spaza shop owner in the area and allegedly gave the girls money after assaulting them.

“The 12-year-old said the suspect gave her R10 after raping her. She also said it was not the first time he raped her,” said Makhubela.

The man allegedly fondled the private parts of other two girls. He also gave them money, Makhubela said.

Makhubela said the 15-year-old girl, who lived with foster parents, would be removed from their care.

The suspect would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday. - Sapa
