A North West man has appeared in the Orkney Magistrate's Court for the possession of explosives, North West police said on Thursday.

Mpho Kaholla, 23, was in court on Wednesday on charges of possession of explosives without a licence, Captain Adéle Myburgh said.

He would be back in court on August 2 and remained in custody.

Police, acting on a tip off, arrested Kaholla as he was walking in Shakespeare Avenue, Myburgh said.

“(He)... carried a bag containing explosives to the value of R15 000 over his shoulder. These explosives are enough to damage four ATMs.”

There were blasting cartridges, connector fuses, shock tube assembles, detonators and cords, she said.

She said investigations were continuing, to determine if he could be linked to ATM bombings in the area. – Sapa
