Durban - A Pietermaritzburg man wanted for murder and robbery and hunted by police for six years has been captured on the South Coast.

Vusi Israel Madondo, 34, was first arrested and charged with murder in December 2007 but then claimed to be ill and was taken to Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg where he escaped while under police guard.

His three co-accused were sentenced to life imprisonment. On Sunday, police spokeswoman Joey Jeevan said Madondo was caught in Kwamakhuta last week with an unlicensed gun and ammunition.

It was then discovered he was linked to crimes in Pietermaritzburg.

Jeevan said that while on the run Madondo had allegedly terrorised Copesville in Pietermaritzburg where he was suspected of committing several violent crimes, including house robberies.

He is also linked to the kidnapping and murder of Sifiso Nzuza in September 2010, apparently after Nzuza told someone Madondo robbed their home.

In December, he was allegedly in a gang that broke into four houses near Copesville.

Lieutenant Sizwe Makhathini, from the Mountain Rise serious and violent crimes unit, has appealed to anyone who has a case against Madondo to call 082 925 2582.
