Cape Town - A 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with a triple murder, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said the man was arrested on Monday in connection with murder and possession of stolen property in the Mesiya Informal Settlement in Samora Machel, Nyanga.

“He and other community members allegedly assaulted three family members to death on Sunday night in Mesiya Informal Settlement ... The three victims were assaulted when they came to confront the suspect who earlier robbed a cellphone from one of the victims,” he said in a statement.

“Police found three dangerous weapons not far from the crime scene. An arrest of a second suspect is eminent.”

Van Wyk said the man was released on parole in July, in a case related to attempted murder.

“Clothing items full of blood, a number of stolen appliances, wallets with various bank cards and DVDs were also recovered inside his shack,” he said.

The man is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a triple murder charge and possession of stolen property.
