Johannesburg - A man was arrested after he was found in possession of 7 000 mandrax tablets concealed as dog food at a hotel in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said police received a tip-off about drug dealing in the area and kept an eye on the hotel parking lot on Monday night.
“After sometime, at around 10pm, a BMW arrived. Members pounced on the owner and searched the vehicle. They found two big bags of dog food sealed, inside the bags were seven bags each containing 1 000 mandrax tablets,” said Kweza.
The man then took police to his home in Walkerville where they found chemicals and equipment used to produce drugs.
The 46-year-old man is expected to appear in court soon on charges of drug possession.
