Mariti, Mpumalanga -

An Mpumalanga man has been shot dead and another wounded in a shootout with police in Mariti near Bushbuckridge, police said on Thursday.

Police, acting on a tip-off about a vehicle carrying firearms on Hazyview Road, spotted a white Toyota Hilux on Wednesday night, Lt-Col Leonard Hlathi said.

“When the occupants saw police, they fired at them and a shootout ensued, whereby one suspect was fatally shot and another wounded in his left leg.”

Hlathi said one police vehicle was damaged. Police found an AK47 with a silencer, a 9mm pistol and a panga.

The 24-year-old wounded man was taken to a local hospital under police guard. He would appear in court once he recovered.

It was suspected that the pair were on their way to commit crime.

“It goes without saying that the suspects were on the way to commit crime and their tracks were intercepted by the police,” said Hlathi. - Sapa
