Western Cape - A man will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he was arrested for possession of abalone valued at R500 000, police said.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the Chinese man, 46, was arrested on Sunday in Table View.

“At approximately 14:30 members from Border Police and Khayelitsha Tactical Response Team accompanied the detectives to the premises in Study Street where they uncovered an illegal abalone processing facility. Numerous items of equipment, including large stainless steel cooking pots, gas cylinders and burners, scales, fans, plastic containers and shelves were seized,” van Wyk said in a statement.

He said officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries were summoned to the scene, and counted the abalone. “It amounted to 4 757 units of shucked abalone.”
