Durban - A Glenwood man is fighting for his life after he was shot in the chest during a hijacking as he arrived home at his Marcus Avenue flat on Saturday night.
It was at least the second recent theft of a vehicle in the avenue. Another was stolen two weeks ago.
Ivan van der Merwe, a witness and neighbour who was one of the first to arrive at the scene, said he heard screaming, then a gunshot.
“I found a guy lying in the driveway.
“I saw where the blood was coming from, tried to keep him still and called some of his friends.”
Thulani Cathu, 32, was transferred to King Edward VIII Hospital after being taken to St Augustine’s Hospital, said his friend, Sihle Manciya.
Cathu’s girlfriend, Balisa Makhawula, said, “We were coming from Mayville. As he parked in the garage, two men showed up with a gun. They dragged him out of the car, shot him and pointed the gun at me.”
She said she hid behind a car parked at the side of the road as the robbers sped off.
“I’m not sure of his condition. The doctors spoke to his family, who came from Lusiki-siki (Eastern Cape), but nothing was said to me,” she said.
Police spokesman Thulani Zwane confirmed the attack, saying the police were investigating a case of attempted murder and hijacking.
Christopher Bukara, resident of a flat in the same road, told The Mercury on Sunday that his Toyota Hilux bakkie had been stolen “seconds” after he had parked it last month.
He had moved into the complex two weeks before the theft.
