Durban - A Jacobs Hostel resident, who allegedly stabbed a man 14 times because he suspected he was having an affair with his girlfriend, is on the run from police.

Soon after the killing, angry residents allegedly torched the man’s rooms inside the hostel.

Khulekani Mvubu was stabbed during an altercation with the man, on Sunday, at the hostel near uMlazi.

He apparently accused Mvubu of having an affair with his girlfriend.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said there had been an argument between the two men before Mvubu was stabbed.

“Residents became angry and they allegedly set alight two rooms in the unit belonging to the suspect and his girlfriend,” Zwane said.

The man was on the run, police said.

S’bonelo Mkhize, who also lived with the suspect, had been at an inter-hostel soccer match when he heard about the stabbing and the fire.

“When I got home, I saw Khule near the gate. He was lying on his back and had multiple stab wounds. The biggest one was on the left side of his lower chest.”

“The blood was squirting out of this big wound. But he was still breathing.”

Mkhize said he then noticed smoke coming out of his room.

He grabbed a hose and tried to extinguish the flames.

“I don’t know how the fire started. I had packed my bags to go home for the Easter weekend. All my stuff was lost in the fire.”

Mkhize said Mvubu was the manager and coach of the hostel’s soccer club. He described him as a decent man.

Other residents, who did not want to be named, said Mvubu was at the sports ground when he got a message fom one of the players.

The suspect’s girlfriend had allegedly wanted him to collect his cellphone from her.

Residents said the suspect’s girlfriend had used Mvubu’s cellphone to call one of the players.

“Mvubu left the ground and when he got to the hostel he was killed,” they said.

Residents chased after the suspect, but when he got to the freeway he stopped an uMlazi taxi and jumped into it, bystanders said.
