Johannesburg – A 47-year-old man has been convicted and sentenced by the Butterworth Regional Court in the Eastern Cape to 18 years imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old girl.

Eastern Cape police said on Friday that Luvuyo Sitiyana was sentenced for the November 2014 rape of the girl at Qina Location, Mpeta Village, at Ngqamakhwe.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said: "It is alleged that the accused was pushing a wheelbarrow on the date in question. He gave a lift to the victim and carried her to an unused house. Once they were in the house, he raped the victim."

A case of rape was registered at Ngqamakhwe police station.

Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) took over the case for further investigation and managed to successfully trace and arrest the accused.
