Kimberley – A 31-year-old man was in custody on Monday after allegedly trying to rape a young woman in her bedroom in Greenpoint, Kimberley at the weekend, Northern Cape police said.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to police spokesman Sergio Kock, the woman, 20, was sleeping “when she was allegedly woken up by a man who was busy pulling down her pants”.

“The complainant screamed for help. The suspect fled through the same bedroom window where he allegedly gained entrance into the premises,” Kock said.

“The neighbours were alerted and chased after the 31-year-old male suspect.”

Police later arrested the suspect at his home.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon.
