New Brighton, Port Elizabeth - A 19-old-man was arrested after he robbed a bus driver of an undisclosed amount of cash in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, on Monday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

Two men robbed a bus driver at gunpoint on Ntshekisa Road and fled, police spokesman Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said.

“Community members gave chase and managed to arrest one of the two robbers and assaulted him, while the other ran away.”

The stolen money was recovered. The robber was admitted to a local hospital with head injuries. Gwavu said a man who allegedly took the robber's gun, after residents had disarmed him, was also arrested.

Both were expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of armed robbery and defeating the ends of justice.
