Mthatha - A man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a shop in Mputi village, Dutywa, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

“It is alleged that two suspects entered a shop at Ngonyama location, Mputi village, Dutywa and one of the suspects fired a shot on Saturday at about 6pm,” Captain Jackson Manatha said.

They robbed the shop of money and groceries.

A 26-year-old woman in the shop, who was robbed by the men, alerted locals.

“The community members came in their numbers and gave chase. One suspect aged 30 was caught with an undisclosed amount of money. The other suspect ran for his dear life and was not caught,” said Manatha.

“The suspect was not assaulted by the community members and he was handed over to Dutywa police.”

No one was injured in the robbery.

Manatha praised residents for not taking the law into their own hands.
