Johannesburg - A man has been arrested after autopsy results found a woman, originally believed to have died of natural causes, had in fact been strangled, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

Earlier this month the body of a 40-year-old woman was found in a house in Bergsig in Kirkwood, police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu said in a statement.

“At the time no foul play was suspected...However post mortem results revealed that Plaatjies died due to strangulation.”

A murder case was then opened and the man, aged 24, was arrested on Friday evening.

He will appear in court soon.

In a separate incident, police are investigating the murder of a woman who was stabbed to death apparently after going to visit friends in Kirkwood on Friday evening.

When the woman, aged 30, returned home in the early hours of Saturday morning she showed her live-in boyfriend a stab wound on her chest.

“The woman did not say anything and went to sleep. Her boyfriend found her lifeless body in the morning.”

Police expect to make an arrest soon. - Sapa
