Rustenburg - A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman at a mine in Rustenburg, North West police said on Thursday.
“The man was arrested on Wednesday for murder. Police are investigating whether the woman was also raped,” said Brig Thulani Ngubane.
He said the man was expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The woman's body was found underground at Aquarius platinum mine’s Kwezi shaft on Wednesday morning.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) congratulated the police on the swift arrest.
“We appeal to the police to crack down on those responsible for the escalating intimidation, threats and violence in the Rustenburg area,” said NUM general secretary Frans Baleni.
“As a union, we abhor violence.... It is regrettable that the escalating violence against women in particular seeks to reverse the gains the country made in relation to the employment of women in the mines.”
Baleni appealed to the police to ensure a successful prosecution and to move further in their investigations into the death of Pinky Mosiane, who was killed at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) two years ago.
“(The) NUM further calls on Amplats to reveal the outcome of its independent investigations into the death of Pinky Mosiane,” he said.
