Cape Town - A man linked to the theft of bricks has been arrested in Manenberg, Cape Town, the City's safety and security department said on Wednesday.

He was caught on Tuesday during a patrol by members of the rapid response unit along Govan Mbeki Road, Manenberg.

The officers spotted a man loading bricks into a wheelie bin.

“Officers approached the man and found that he had approximately 80 bricks in the bin, taken from an area that had recently been paved by the City,” mayoral committee member responsible for safety and security Jean-Pierre Smith said in a statement.

“The suspect was arrested for theft of council property and taken to Manenberg police station.”

Smith said further investigations revealed that the same man allegedly provided the bricks to a person selling them along the side of Govan Mbeki Road.

“Officers confiscated approximately 2700 bricks which, at an average weight of nearly 3kg each, amounts to more than eight tons of bricks that had been stolen,” he said.
