Nelspruit - A 26-year-old man appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for allegedly beating a goat to death, Mpumalanga police said.

Sipho Makamu appeared on allegations of cruelty to animals after a video of a goat being beaten to death circulated on social media, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

Makamu was released on warning and the case was postponed to November 10 for further investigation.

The video landed in the hands of the police and the SA Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SAARAC).

“The police in Tonga and inspectors from SAARAC instituted an investigation regarding the video and it led them to a house at Mzinti near Malelane (on Tuesday) where Makamu was arrested,” he said.

“The police management is pleased with the arrest of Makamu and believe that other community members will learn from the consequences of this senseless conduct.”

Hlathi said the police strongly condemned cruelty to animals and urged members of the community who witnessed this kind of cruelty to report it.
