Ramsgate, Durban -

A man accused of killing ANC councillor Wandile Mkhize appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate's Court on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Kwanele Cedric Hlongwa,40, would be back in court on September 5 for a bail application, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

He was arrested in Umlazi, Durban, on Tuesday. A 9mm pistol was found in his possession.

Naicker said Hlongwa faced charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He was charged with the murders of Mkhize and his friend Nhlakanipho Shabane, 24.

Mkhize was shot dead in a drive-by shooting near his home in Manaba, Margate, on July 30. Shabane, who was with him at the time, died later in hospital.

Another man, who is accused of conspiring to murder Mkhize, appeared in court on Tuesday.

Dumisani Skhakhane, 33, will also appear again on September 5. - Sapa
