KwaZulu-Natal - A man accused of raping a 94-year-old woman appeared in the New Hanover Magistrate's Court on Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Ntuthuko Ndlela, 26, would be back in court on August 7 for a bail application, Captain Thulani Zwane said.
The woman was attacked and raped in her home near Wartburg on July 23.
The man was arrested on Monday.
Court proceedings were attended by about 70 ANC members, including provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala and Congress of SA Trade Unions provincial secretary Zet Luzipo.
“The ANC will continue to support elderly woman who have been raped in the province,” Zikalala said.
Three elderly women have been raped in the province in less than a month.
Zikalala said the party had developed a programme for Women's Month, which would include awareness campaigns on the abuse of women and children.
The Witness reported on Friday that a 60-year-old woman was raped and killed in KwaDambuza, Pietermaritzburg.
The woman's naked body was discovered by residents near a sewage pipe on Wednesday.
Her face was severely beaten.
Her partner identified the body by her limbs.
The woman was last seen on Wednesday, when she left her home to go to a clinic.
Another woman, 82, was raped in her house in Swayimane on Saturday. No arrests had yet been made.
