Durban - A 24-YEAR-old Chesterville man appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly killing his pregnant girlfriend by chopping her up and burning some of her remains.

Lwazi Gumede has been charged for the murder of Sanelisiwe Mkhize, 22, of KwaNdengezi, near Pinetown.

Parts of Mkhize’s body – without the head and the foetus she had been carrying – were found in bushes on Friday, a day after Gumede was arrested.

A police search and rescue team went to the Chesterville area on Monday to search for the rest of the body.

Lungile Mkhize had reported her younger sister missing on February 24 to Cato Manor police.

Sanelisiwe had told her sister that she was going to stay with her boyfriend, Gumede, because she had a doctor’s appointment at King Edward VIII Hospital on February 21.

Gumede, who is unemployed and lives in an informal settlement in Chesterville, is expected to apply for bail next week.

Sanelisiwe’s family have said that Gumede initially helped them search for his girlfriend when she was reported missing.
