A man accused of raping a five-year-old girl appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Friday, Limpopo police said.

The 28-year-old man would remain in custody and be back in court on June 26, for his formal bail application, spokesman Constable Moses Molepo said.

“It was believed the girl was walking home from school on Friday, last week, when the man grabbed her and dragged her into nearby bushes, where he raped her.”

The girl was walking with her mother on Wednesday when she recognised the man.

Molepo said the girl broke down and told her mother what had happened.
