Kimberley - A man accused of raping a six-week-old baby appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court, in the Northern Cape, on Thursday, the NPA said.

The case was postponed to January 8, said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokeswoman Mashudu Malabi.

The 24-year-old man, who is said to be the baby's uncle, would remain in custody. He allegedly raped the child on the night of Tuesday, November 25.

The baby was admitted to hospital where she received intensive care.

She underwent an operation and had since been referred to the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein, and was said to be in a stable condition.
